Jeffrey Vanvels' trial in the death of Grand Rapids Police Deparment Officer Robert Kozminski starts with jury selection on Monday.
It has been a long ten months since Officer Kozminski was killed, but finally the Kozminski family, the Grand Rapids Police Department, the greater Grand Rapids area community and the Law Enforcement community as a whole will begin taking the first steps towards receiving justice.
Due to the immense outpouring of community support and intense media coverage of the incident and Officer Kozminski's funeral it is expected to take some time to find jurors.
The trial itself is expected to take several weeks to complete, and the prosecution has more than 100 witnesses listed.
GRPD Lieutenant Ralph Mason had this to say in a Grand Rapids Press Article about the upcoming trial:
For police, the past 10 months have been wrenching, and the trial could reopen wounds. This is one of the worst experiences that they will ever have to deal with. I can remember questioning if I could even get through the pain, but throughout all of this, the citizens of Grand Rapids have been phenomenal.
