Drug Identification for Law Enforcement Print E-mail
Friday, 21 March 2008

drug identificationDrug identification has been a real problem for the Road Deputy or Officer for years with huge, expensive books (PDR- Physician's Desk Reference) being the primary source of information, but some online and "old school" tools you may not know about can help to make the process of identifying prescription medication pills easier.

I was turned on to using Poison Control for this purpose a few years ago by one of our K-9 Deputies, and I have found them to be an invaluable resource for the quick identification of prescription pills on scene. I never have been on the phone for longer than a couple minutes before they could identify the drug in question, and they have always been accurate. If you need them the phone number for Poison Control is 1-800-222-1222. I just saved them as a contact in my phone because I always forget the number and have to ask dispatch for it.

If you are near a computer one online resource that was recommended to me recently was the Drugs.com pill identifier website. This online tool allows you to search for drugs by any combination of the Imprint on the pill or the color or shape of the pill and provides pictures of the pills to help confirm that you have the right drug. If you know the name of the drug (or whatever your suspect is claiming it is) you can also search by name and check out a picture to confirm.

One of our Detectives also recommended DanceSafe.org which he finds to be a great resource for learning about and helping to identify different types of designer or club drugs.
